I've managed with my free gold to get to level 18 and $300,000 silver including stockpiled produce. I've played for 2 1/2 days so far but I haven't purchased any gold yet. I'm not really understanding how you made $3,500 gold? do you mean 3,500 gold or did you mean you spent some gold to get $3,500 silver? The only way you can make gold without purchasing it is from leveling, one of the collections, the accomplishments, and a few small amounts from quests. The number of Stars you need to move to the next level keeps increasing (of course!), so I have no idea how long/how much Money it will take to get to Level 40. I've presently got $500,000 in produce stockpiled in the Barn for Quests, Canning, and making Textiles. I've earned approximately $3,500 in gold since I first paid. I've made up the extra Silver I paid for at least 50 times over.
I've made a lot of mistakes learning to play Farm Up, and wrote the Guides so other people would have foreknowledge. I quickly became obsessed with this game and couldn't wait to move on and didn't want to worry about Energy and Money, so I paid up. I spent some cash up front and have been playing for 16 hours at a time, so therefore my results aren't typical for someone who isn't paying for extra time/energy and money.
